Walbridge Caring
Communities Program

Walbridge Caring Communities Program was a highly acclaimed pilot program that began in St. Louis on May 15, 1989. Wrap-around services were provided to students and families in the crime-infested neighborhood of Walnut Park. These wrap-around services included counseling, substance abuse counseling, crisis intervention, day treatment, pre-employment, after school tutoring, latchkey, health liaison, student assistance and anti-gang/anti-drug activities.

A successful evaluation of Walbridge Caring Communities Program resulted in the expansion of the program sites from 1 to 20 sites across the city of St. Louis; over a thirteen year period. Delegates and representatives from all over the world visited Walbridge Caring Communities; across the United States, some from Amsterdam and also Israeli.  Others requested best practice packages and studies about Caring Communities.  The site visits and requests for information about Caring Communities was the seed that led to an Caring Communities Archival Library of documents, case studies, evaluations, newspaper clippings, data records, photos, digital files and the expansion efforts. Caring Communities transitioned; not providing direct services under ARCHS and expanded to 20 Caring Communities sites statewide under Family Investment Trust. (FACT).
